Nutrition & Healing
The importance of nutritional healing.
Good nutrition plays a vital role both in healing from chronic pain and illness and in optimizing mental and emotional functioning. The Western diet, with its emphasis on animal products, processed food, and large quantities of sugar and stimulants, has resulted not only in a dramatic rise in obesity, diabetes, and other illnesses. It has affected all levels of health in the Western world, including the physical, the emotional, and the mental.
People in the Western hemisphere suffer from much higher rates not only of diabetes, cancer and heart disease than in the Asian world. They also have far higher rates of arthritis and chronic pain, multiple sclerosis and Parkinsons’disease, as well as dramatically higher levels of autism, ADHD, and related so-called mental disorders.
Poor nutrition is a significant cause of the decline of health in the West in general, and most particularly in the United States, which currently ranks 49th in the world in overall health.
Basic steps in nutritional healing.
From a nutritional perspective, the best approach to healing at all levels is to emphasize organic, whole, unprocessed food, eliminating all canned or packaged products that contain sugar or high fructose corn sugar, and reducing the consumption of other acid-forming foods that are hard to digest and that make you more susceptible to disease. This means reducing consumption of animal protein, wheat, caffeinated products, most dairy and alcohol, and increasing the consumption of vegetables, especially leafy greens. Just making these changes can contribute to dramatic improvements in health.
